Model Shoot – David on Location

Since rebranding to “You are Beautiful” and devoting my time to my calling, photographing women, I have had very limited opportunities to work with male models.  That was until I had the opportunity to photograph David from Mystique Model Management at the location photoshoot recently held in Brisbane.

As we were getting to the hottest part of the day we started this shoot in casual clothing and found another cafe location within the grounds of QUT that had mix of glass, stark white and bold colours with a twist of a vintage industrial look.  Once behind the camera I have to stop myself from saying to David “chin out and down”, “push out that hip” or “give me a nice curve” and remember that I am photographing a man today.  Men are strong, muscular, fit and tall and need to be photographed in that way to best enhance their assets.  I was pleased to find that in front of the camera David oozes confidence and charm, making my job very easy.

Even in this heat I was able to convince David to change into his second look for the day, a business suit.  For our next location we move to the back steel stairwell area where there is a mix of glass, benches and stairs and this is where I start to push my boundaries and have a play with some mood lighting with a vision to convert to black and white images on processing.

More about David:  David is actually part of the marketing division of Mystique Model Management and is currently studying medicine at Uni to become Doctor so is waiting to see how that goes before signing a modelling contract.  You never know Australia, we may have our first Dr McDreamy right here 😉

David is a very easy going, smart, lovely person who impressed me greatly.  David is also well on his way to achieving his goals and has a clear future path in mind.  David was a pleasure to work with and I wish him all the success in the world and anytime he wants to model I will always be available.

Until next week,

Model – Location Shoot continued

In early February I blogged a very hot day in Brisbane shooting models represented by Mystique Model Management on location at the Brisbane Botantical Gardens and QUT and introduced you to one of the models, Holly, with a promise to introduce you to more of the other models from the day in the near future.

This week I continue with my second model shoot from the day with the all so fabulous and stunning, Kris Louise.  Now I am not a stranger to Kris as we have worked together before with a more casual photoshoot in my studio back in 2013.  This time I get to shoot Kris in Couture fashion supplied by Niki Teljega – Fashion Label and hair and makeup by Amy Cannon.

The first outfit is a floor length black gown with sheer openings that from the waist down has an abundance of flowing fabric that is to die for.  For this outfit I decided to take Kris over to into the QUT building area.  Using a mixture of the sandstone pillars and the buildings as our backdrop we went to work.

I had the added bonus that Kris had a very close male friend along for the day who was dressed in a suit and happy to step in and complete the picture (pun intended 😉 ) I mean, who doesn’t want a hansome man to hold when dressed to kill.

Kris second outfit was a figure hugging jumpsuit with a plunging neckline.  This jumpsuit looked like is was made just for Kris, the fit was perfect, showing off her killer body in all the right places.  With the permission of the cafe within the QUT campus we used the tables and chairs as our backdrop.  After all a jumpsuit is a perfect outfit for coffee with the girls or a lunch date with your man.

A little more about Kris: When I first met Kris she was knee deep in studying her Bachelor of Nursing and since then as at the end of 2014 completed that and a Bachelor of Paramedic Science as well and has now secured a dream job in her chosen field on the Gold Coast.

It’s great to have Kris back home on the Gold Coast allowing me more opportunities to shoot with Kris in the future.

Stay tuned next time I will introduce you to one of the male models from the day, David.

Until next week.

Model – Location PhotoShoot

Oh my, it’s hot!  You know it’s hot when at 5am in the morning you’re sweating before throwing gear into the car and the ice in your frozen drink melts within 5 minutes!  That is how my day started on very hot and muggy Sunday morning in January.  Where am I headed at 5am on a Sunday morning?  I’m heading to photograph models represented by Mystique Model Management on location at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens and QUT.

A fellow photographer and owner of Mystique Model Management, David met us on our arrival at the Botanical Gardens and we starting scouting our locations and getting set up – we were keen for shade as it was set to be a record breaking heat wave kind of day!  Both David and I are photographing today.  We have 18 models to photograph, nine each and we have two very experienced makeup artists working with us – Morgan of Morgan Leigh Makeup Artistry and Amy Cannon of Beauty and a Beast Makeup Artistry.

All the models outfits have been supplied by multi award winning designer Niki Teljega of Niki Teljega – Fashion Label.

My first model for the day was Holly Priscilla.  Holly’s hair and make up has been applied by Morgan Leigh.  Holly is relatively new in the industry and discovered by David last year when an existing model, already signed with Mystique, encouraged Holly to ring and attend a casting day.  The rest they say, is history.  Holly is an absolute delightful person and a dream model to shoot with.

Holly didn’t hesitate to do anything I asked.  Her first outfit was a gorgeous floor length gold Couture gown, complete with 6 inch heels.  Holly made the gown look even more stunning.  I photographed her standing in amongst trees, branches and leaves, in a clump of bamboo where she was getting eating alive by mozzies (whoever said modelling was a glamorous life, clearly haven’t tried it)

Holly’s second outfit was a form fitting little black dress, plunging neckline with a little bling on the waist, it really showed off her figure and allowed me to show off the curve of her body and capture her at beautiful angles  – truly she is every photographer’s dream.  Using the bright green clumps of bamboo as our backdrop made Holly and Niki’s outfit the stars in all my photos.

A little more about Holly: she loves fashion and commercial modelling;  She would like to be seen as an inspiration for women everywhere to be fit and healthy; her dream is to become an ambassador for a large fitness brand, as she loves to travel her goal is to combine traveling to exoctic places with shooting on fashion assignments.

In my opinion Holly is well on her way to achieving these goals and will be an international model to look out for in the future.

Stay tuned for more adventures of the day in future blogs.

Until next week,

In Front of the Lens – My Glamour session

In March this year I blogged “Exist in photos for your children” after watching Sue Bryce, and got more than I bargained for in the process.

As a women’s glamour photographer I am always behind the lens, taking the shots and guiding women in their posing to get those amazing shots and to help make them feel good about themselves.  Last weekend I chose, a little reluctantly, to put myself in their situation and get in front of the lens.

A photographer and good friend of mine, Vikki, who runs La Dee Dah Portraits agreed to “shoot me”.  Vikki creates these beautiful classic Hollywood glamour style portraits and I really love her work and wanted a photo of me like this.  For those who know me personally know I have lots of internal struggles including weight and self love, so this was extremely nerve raking, but remembering Sue’s comments from March I was determined to push through.

Last Saturday, amongst a group of good friends (who just also happen to be photographers) I got my glam on, with makeup and pampering by Tami of Dr Dread.  Then it was time for Vikki to take over – Wow getting in front of the camera is hard and those poses – yep ok I get it now.  The experience was daunting, I was so nervous every time the camera came up I froze.  In my head I was trying to get the pose down and that just made Vikki’s job a whole lot harder, it was hard to relax and be guided and give that trust to someone else.

Vikki had a tough job.  I was not an easy “client” but in the end she was able to break down the barriers and get some beautiful photos.

Now viewing the photos is a whole other realisation, initial thoughts that run through are, ‘oh my – is my face really that round’,  but then something happens and you overlook all the imperfections and just take in the beauty, of yourself.  For me I never realised how beautiful my eyes, actually seemed to smile.  It took these photos to show me that.

I now know how my clients feel and I appreciate the experience more.  The lesson is to share that trust and to find within yourself the beauty that we all have. “Be your own kind of Beautiful”.  Not just a phrase, but a way of thought.  Be proud of who you are, always.

Thank you Vikki for your time, patience and the beautiful photos.  I am forever grateful. x

Glamour Photography

A few weeks ago I came home with some great fashion buys after a morning of shopping.  I picked up this stunning black and silver dress that was straight then at the bottom it flared out, it was something a flamingo dancer might wear.  This got my creative juices flowing for another glamour photoshoot.

I specifically wanted a woman with red hair as I knew the contrast of the red hair with the black dress would be a stunning combination and would fit to my vision that was swirling around in my head.  I wanted natural glamour makeup with soft curled hair and some flowers in the hair to add a high fashion element to the shoot.

My model chosen for this shoot is from Mystique Model Management, her name is Heather Borck and she fits my vision perfectly.  This is my first time working with Heather and I found her very professional as well as warm and friendly.

To complete the creative team I needed a talented and experienced hair and make up artist, Morgan Leigh who runs Morgan Leigh Makeup Artistry.  Morgan and I have previously worked together and I found Morgan’s work of high standard and she is very experienced and knowledgeable, actually Morgan is currently studying for a Diploma of Cinemagraphic Makeup to increase and take her skills to a new level.

Before we start I discuss clothing, hair and make up options with the team – decide on our way forward and then Morgan takes control and “glams” up Heather for our shoot, this experience is very relaxing and I am sure Heather is feeling comfortable whilst undergoing the full treatment.

When finished Heather’s natural beauty has been enhanced and I just can’t wait to get her in front of the camera and watch the magic happen and bring my vision to life.  This is where I feel alive, inspired and very much at home.  I know I am born to do this – Glamour Photography

Here are some of my favourite shots from our day

You are Beautiful – Jaz

I am so excited to share with you a beautiful story of a truly special girl who I had the pleasure to photograph in my studio.

Meet Jaz. When Jaz was growing up she thought she was just like any other girl, a bit of a tomboy who also liked being the centre of attention. As a young girl, Jaz was a creative person who enjoyed singing, dancing and acting and she dreamed of one day becoming famous doing what she loved.

At the age of 14, a family contact suggest Jaz try to get into modeling. Jaz was unsure about modeling as her dream was to become a world famous actress, not a model. However Jaz agreed to go for an interview with the modeling agency and to her surprise she was signed straight away for modeling, acting and dancing. Jaz only told her closest friends she was signed with a model agency.

At School Jaz was constantly bullied for being a little different, she dressed differently to the “cool girls” and they didn’t like anyone being “different”. These bullies discovered Jaz was doing fashion shows in shopping centres and just couldn’t believe that the “punk girl” who sat up the back of the class was a glamour model. Jaz modeled with that agency for just over a year before they closed down.

Modeling didn’t shop there for Jaz. A local photographer ‘found’ her and would take her along to camera club meetings where she modeled for portraits. Exposure to all these photographers helped Jaz learn about posing and being in front of a camera. During this time, Jaz competed in modeling competitions and placed well.

About 4 years ago Jaz met her love, Michael. Six months after meeting they found out she was pregnant and 9 months later she gave birth to a beautiful boy, Corban. Modeling life was put on hold for a short time, not only to concentrate on being a mum to her beautiful boy but also to take time to get her body back in shape.

Jaz did return to modeling. Jaz was on a train, returning home from a photo shoot, when a group of girls assaulted her. The assault didn’t result in a lot of physical damage but the mental damage scarred her and changed her deeply. Her son was not even one and the assault left Jaz suffering with diagnosed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She was afraid to go anywhere alone and she couldn’t bare the thought of modeling.

Jaz eventually found a modeling group called TrashDolls. TrashDolls are a Melbourne based group, the girls are all a little different, they are all girls that felt they didn’t fit inside the little box that society calls “normal”. They are about ‘trashing the perception of perfection’ and they call themselves “dolls”. Outside of her family and close friends it was this group that gave Jaz the love and support she needed to get back on her feet. Jaz created and models under the name of Venom Miss Symbiote, it is her way of keeping the modeling life separate from her personal life. It is a great way to realise her alter ego without reflecting on her personally and her family. The name came from the Marvel anti-hero The Venom Symbiote. Jaz relates to the character and friends often joke that when she gets mad or does something out of character, it’s the Symbiotes fault.

Jaz has been with TrashDolls for a few years now. She believes so strongly in the dedication, honesty, teamwork and support that TrashDolls appointment Jaz the State Manager of Queensland.

Jaz is such an inspirational and wonderful woman. Whether as Venom Miss Symbiote or Jaz I believe we can all learn something from her, especially her outlook on life: “When you truly love something never give up no matter what life throws at you”. Jaz is a very humble and down to earth person with a beautiful soul. It was an absolute pleasure to photograph her and in the process get to know more about her.

Jaz, You are Beautiful

Exist in Photos for your Children

This week I’ve been challenged with another life defining moment.  I tuned in to watch Photographer, Sue Bryce present a lesson on marketing and business mentoring on Creativelive and I received more than I bargained for.  This woman knows how to connect with me, there is something about what she says that makes me cry then look deep within myself to explore the truth of just where I’m at.

Sue Bryce, said many things that stuck with me, but the most important for me was to exist in photos for your children.  Stop putting off having your photo taken, your children and family don’t care how you ‘think’ you look – Let’s face it we all think we have weight to lose or too many laugh lines … but guess what, life has lots of imperfections and that is what makes us so uniquely us!   Beauty comes from within, beauty shines with love, friendship and being happy and alive.

This means for me it is time, face the truth, find love within myself, start to smile again and yes lose the ‘baggage’ that I carry around each day.  I am going to exist in photos for my family, my loved ones and my children.  This is a gift they will treasure forever.

As I am writing to tell you this I declare I will embrace who I am, arrange a photo session myself and I will share all the details and the experience of it with you and I know it will be wonderful.

Life takes many unexpected twists and turns and we never know what is around the corner so please, for me and for yourself, be proud and strong and exist in photos for your children.
