In Front of the Lens – My Glamour session

In March this year I blogged “Exist in photos for your children” after watching Sue Bryce, and got more than I bargained for in the process.

As a women’s glamour photographer I am always behind the lens, taking the shots and guiding women in their posing to get those amazing shots and to help make them feel good about themselves.  Last weekend I chose, a little reluctantly, to put myself in their situation and get in front of the lens.

A photographer and good friend of mine, Vikki, who runs La Dee Dah Portraits agreed to “shoot me”.  Vikki creates these beautiful classic Hollywood glamour style portraits and I really love her work and wanted a photo of me like this.  For those who know me personally know I have lots of internal struggles including weight and self love, so this was extremely nerve raking, but remembering Sue’s comments from March I was determined to push through.

Last Saturday, amongst a group of good friends (who just also happen to be photographers) I got my glam on, with makeup and pampering by Tami of Dr Dread.  Then it was time for Vikki to take over – Wow getting in front of the camera is hard and those poses – yep ok I get it now.  The experience was daunting, I was so nervous every time the camera came up I froze.  In my head I was trying to get the pose down and that just made Vikki’s job a whole lot harder, it was hard to relax and be guided and give that trust to someone else.

Vikki had a tough job.  I was not an easy “client” but in the end she was able to break down the barriers and get some beautiful photos.

Now viewing the photos is a whole other realisation, initial thoughts that run through are, ‘oh my – is my face really that round’,  but then something happens and you overlook all the imperfections and just take in the beauty, of yourself.  For me I never realised how beautiful my eyes, actually seemed to smile.  It took these photos to show me that.

I now know how my clients feel and I appreciate the experience more.  The lesson is to share that trust and to find within yourself the beauty that we all have. “Be your own kind of Beautiful”.  Not just a phrase, but a way of thought.  Be proud of who you are, always.

Thank you Vikki for your time, patience and the beautiful photos.  I am forever grateful. x

Spring has Sprung

Spring is here – the weather is warming up, the doona gets pushed aside, you sleep with your feet out of the covers, the birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, the parks are full of ducklings and assorted chicks, the cat wakes up and wants out and the snakes are on the move, all sure signs that we are now in Spring.

It is time to pull out those cute colourful dresses, organise a pedicure and slip on those comfy sandals that have been in the back of your cupboard for the last few months.

I love this time of year, it inspires creativity, clean ups, clean outs, an excuse for new clothes or shoes or both oh I could go on and on.

Spring 2013 looks like a return to pastel colours, floral and girly-girl styles – my kind of trends.

Pastels and Pattern Dresses are back

Pastels and Pattern Dresses are back

I sat down with Meg from Chanc3Industries and asked her some for some inside goss and tips on the makeup for Spring, here is a little bit from our chat.

Meg, what are you seeing as the make up trends for this season?

“Make up trends for Spring 2013 are following the lead set by the major fashion houses reflecting the faces on the catwalk, fresh and flirty with a touch of grunge glamour”

Can you describe a feature look for the season?

“A big look of the season is pink in bright fun shades and lots of it!   The key to nailing this trend is to focus on one area (eyes, lips or cheeks) in an eye-catching shade of pink leaving the rest of the face matte and fresh for maximum effect without over doing it, keep hair simple and team with a powder blue dress for blondes or pale lemon for brunettes.”

I believe Retro is back, have you seen or heard anything?

“Yes it has made an appearance however rather than the 50’s inspired look that has been featured the past few years big name labels such as Moschino and Louis Vuitton have opted for a mod 60’s inspired look.  This doesn’t mean ditching the cat eye but making your lines thicker and the addition of twiggy like bottom lash lines will give you a more on trend guise.  White eyeliner is also a red hot way to emulate this trend.  Hair is also following this trend with a modern take on the beehive and lots of volume.”

Grunge was always associated with the post party panda eyes, is this what is coming back?

“Oh yes, I remember those panda eyes, however there is no need to fret – Grunge glamour being redefined by houses such as Diane Von Hurstenberg and Versace who featured their models with a neutral lid smudged with kohl on the bottom lash line.  This look is simple to achieve at home simply apply kohl or powder liner to bottom lash line and blend.  Keep the rest of the base neutral and matte concentrating on contouring the cheek bones and hair tousled and carefree.”

Lastly is there anything else coming back?

“Lashes are back!  Spring sees the return of big, voluminous statement lashes.  When wearing dramatic lashes aim to keep the rest of your make up simple with neutral eyes (think shades of gold or bronze with a metallic element or soft pastel colours with a well-defined lash line) and a nude lip to avoid the drag queen effect.  The key to this look is more is less to achieve a graceful doe-eyed appearance.”

Thanks, Meg for taking the time to chat with me, there is sure to be a look for everyone this springtime.

All these new trends have given me some wonderful creative spring-look ideas that I’m keen to see transformed in photo sessions.

Stay tuned for the finished products.

Until next week.

Blogging – Why do you Blog

Growing up I always kept a diary. I wrote down everything. My experiences, my dreams, my thoughts and expectations and hid them all away from the rest of the world. I was just a young teen when my family moved to an Island and I felt like my world was turned upside down. There was now a considerable distance between myself and my supportive network of friends, how were we ever going to stay in touch? Letter writing.

One friend, in particular, I had known all my life as we had lived just one house apart, we kept in touch by writing regular letters. Some were short notes however most were very long letters. Those letters become an extension of my diary and a way for me to stay connected with the mainland.

I’m not sure when or why it happened but as I grew up I stopped writing. Even my daily journal entries stopped. Looking back, I find this a little sad. I realise now that I had stopped a part of my creative outlet, my personal expression and record of my dreams, experiences, thoughts and expectations.

My Journal

My Journal

On the 17 May 2013 I shared with you all my first blog. I made you all a promise that I would blog every Friday from that time forward. Some might ask the question, why? Why, do you blog?

The answer is simple. I started blogging because I wanted to share a little piece of myself with you. My life, my views, my photos – it is my way of keeping you up to date with photo shoots (my experiences), promotions (my dreams), news (my thoughts) and everything in between (my expectations).

It’s been 3 months already and I am proud of what I have shared with you so far. I must admit I still have a long way to go, it is often hard for me to sit and write, fluently, to keep it interesting, on topic, not too personal yet still keep it ‘me’. I have made a commitment to myself and to you and I do enjoy the challenge.

Blogging is the way I share my life so I am going to ask you, what would you like me to blog about? Please feel free to post a comment below as I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Until next week.

What is Glamour Anyway???

What do you think of when I say that I am a Glamour Photographer, do you think I photograph Models or Magazine cover girls?

It may surprise you to know that what I do is photograph real women – yes REAL. Women like you and I. Women who don’t always feel like we are slim, trim and attractive yet we also have features and assets we are wishing to enhance.

The Lovely Aisha

The Lovely Aisha

Glamour photography is not photography and photo-shopping which leaves you looking like a Barbie doll. Glamour photography is photographing you in a way that will define your best features and allow your inner beauty to shine. I like to say glamour photography is capturing you, at your best, naturally.

Did you know women such as Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Naomi Campbell and Ava Gardner are known as our most famous glamour icons. Now even though all these women are famous, they were not always considered glamorous. They embraced their beauty and developed a very classical look and style. It was only then that the world saw them as glamorous. These amazing women (and many others) captivated us all and made glamour photography desirable.

On further digging I uncovered the history of glamour and I was surprised to learn that glamour was originally said to be a spell cast by a witch to make somebody see things in a different way. Interesting, don’t you think?

I am not a witch who will cast a spell over you so that you see yourself in a different way, I am a glamour photographer with a passion for capturing you as you’ve never been photographed before. Let’s embrace glamour and love it and most importantly allow me to photograph you how others see you, beautiful and classically glamorous.

My New Baby – You are Beautiful

No, it’s not a new family member or animal, my new baby is my new portrait photography experience called ‘You are Beautiful’.

Last Sunday, after months of planning and a lot of hard work behind the ‘studio’ scenes, I welcomed the arrival of ‘You are Beautiful’, the experience, by Solo Images Photography. So what is ‘You are Beautiful’ – this experience shows you, through my portrait photography, the inner beauty and natural glamour in all women possess.

You may ask what is natural beauty, well personally I don’t want to look like the ‘me’ I see everyday nor do I want to look so airbrushed that I look ‘plastic’, I want to look relaxed, natural and alive, because the ‘natural me’ is the ‘beautiful me’ in You are Beautiful’.

I want to break that magazine perception that beauty is only found in models in magazines, perfectly proportioned and with airbrushed skin. Even today you see our young women struggling with appearance and self esteem because of the influence of these mediums. I was one who struggled to accept my appearance. I have always had freckles, and as a small child everyone thought they were cute, then I hit the teenage years. I remember as a late teen those cute freckles became the curse of my existence. I would spend hours in front of the mirror putting on concealer, actually plastering would be a better description so much so that I could have used Dad’s trowel in an attempt to hide what I perceived as a flaw.

I was trying to be that perfect magazine model, hiding what was my natural beauty. So I ask you, what is perfection? Does it really exist? Why does something or someone have to be perfect, why can’t we be beautiful without it?

I believe we can, I see the beauty in YOU, naturally. Nothing gives me a greater pleasure than watching the raw emotion from a woman who sees her photos that I’ve created, for the first time. To have them tell you “Wow is that really me, I’ve never liked a photo of myself until now” and hear the same reactions from their partners, their husbands, or even their parents, it really touches my heart.

I have a genuine passion to show you why you should love yourself just as you are right now. That is my reward, that you experience what those around you see, You are Beautiful. This is my baby and my true calling.

To celebrate the birth of my baby I am offering sessions that are booked in June (photos can be taken at a later time) for only $150 – that is half price.

Call me today on 0421 279 213 and book. I want to show you YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Monday Beauty

At the end of another busy Monday, life does not get any better so I picked a Monday Beauty inspiration to suit:
