Top 5 Favourite Photos

Here we are already, it’s the middle of May and just around the corner we’ll be into the EOFY sale period. I can’t believe we are so close to half of 2014 gone already.  This got me thinking and reflecting on my photography this year so I thought today I would share with you my top 5 favourite photos so far of 2014.

January – so much to choose from this month, day trip to Toowoomba, holidays at the beach and spur of the moment trips to where ever the car took me, it was a tough decision but for me my favourite photo from January would have to be “looking up at the lighthouse” this photo represents my renewed inspiration to look at objects from all angles and then capture the image.  In doing this I allowed my photography to grow and as you can see magic does happen.

"Looking up at the Lighthouse"

February – Back into work mode, long days at the computer and a busy month personally with Birthday’s and Anniversaries.  I didn’t pick up the camera as much as I wanted but when I did I found myself heading into the studio and this brings me to my favourite photo from February “Dare to Dream” I love this photo, to me it represents that it is worth dreaming and planning for great things to come into your future.  I love Paris and I know one day I will get there to photograph the Eiffel Tower.  In the meantime my Paris suitcase will just have to make do.

March – Wow this is a hard one, I had two amazing studio shoots this month, both of these ladies were stunning so it is very difficult to choose between them, since it is my choice and my blog 😉  I am going to share my favourite from each shoot.  Jaz is a strong woman (Her story has been already shared with you through my blog) and my favourite photo of Jaz shows both her soft and strong side in the one photo.  My other lovely woman, Heather, has the most striking red/pink hair and a skin complexion most of us would die for.  My favourite photo from our session is a close up showing Heather’s soul piercing eyes and all that hair and skin beauty.

April – We are now well into Autumn and alot of my focus this month was on landscapes and those stunning autumn colours.  At this time of year, the early morning hours and the late afternoon hours are a photographers dream.  Again very hard to pick just one favourite photo but I if I have to I think for me it would be “Autumn Colours” an abstract sunset, showing off all those gorgeous colours of a sunset in a new and interesting way.

May – We are only half way through the month and the magnificent sunsets are still around but this month’s favourite photo is very easy for me to pick, “Exist in Photos – Mother’s Day” I am taking my own advice to you all this year and getting in front of the camera more often.  On Mother’s day I got a picture of my mother, my daughter and myself – 3 generations in one place on a special day, celebrating Mother’s Day.  What better photo for this month.

I hope you have enjoyed indulging me in a look back over the year so far.

Until next week.

Creative Visions come to Life

I have been recently asked what I do in my “down time” when not photographing glamour or families.  This got me thinking that maybe you don’t know the other side to me, one I am proud of and allows me to express my creative visions and bring them to life.

I got my first taste of the weird and wonderful out of the box photography when I was invited to a creative shoot that became known as “Zipper Face” between the model and photographer they had the theme.  After a full day of shooting I was hooked and wow did my mind go wild.  It was just so easy and fun to work with model Angelic Sinz and her offsider (who is another photographer come model) Jason.

It was that much fun that I had to do another shoot with them.   We threw around some ideas and in the end I wanted to do a bride of something.  In my head it was similar to the romance and wedding of Morticia and Gomez.  I had the perfect location, an abandoned tunnel.  Again using Angelic Sinz and Jason as the models the vision came to life and took on a life of it’s own.

"Bride Of ??"

“Bride Of ??”

Another vision came from a collective group on facebook who would use a photo as inspiration and the group would make it their own.  I call this one the “Doll and Lamp” shoot.  This shoot was done in a studio and a collaboration between model, clothes designer, makeup artist and myself as photographer.  All these people and elements go into making these creative visions successful.

I have already started planning a couple this year as these thoughts tend to give me sleepless nights and lots of daydreams.  I am always happy to collaborate with like minded people and create something special, weird or unique.  It takes more than a photographers creative vision to make this type of shoot successful and I never forget that.  I have worked now with many talented makeup artists and models and without you these are not possible.   If you are interested in my creative side please email me at info@soloimages.com.au for further details and pricing.

Introducing Colt

Colt arrived in my studio on Christmas Eve and this sweet little man was not just adorable, he was a dream model to work with 😉 He was not at all fazed about having his photo taken, in fact, he slept through the entire session!

He truly is a beautiful little boy and I’m proud to share some of my favourite images from our newborn photography session together.

Always Learning the Craft

As photographers, whether new or seasoned veteran’s, we continue to push the boundaries of our creative flair and are always willing to learn and improve our craft.

The buzz in the photography world at the moment has been centred around the International Loupe Awards, and as I write, the judging is taking place and results are coming through.

From my own point of view there was something this year that held me back from taking the plunge into the award arena, I felt that some of my skills needed more refinement to be up to higher quality award standard.

Really if you think about it, you will never know what that standard is unless you are in that arena and being judged? This is a great debate within the industry, are you a better photographer just because you win an award? Does that make you more appealing to your current and potential clients? Or are you wanting recognition for your talent? Now I am not going to enter into this debate as I am certainly not qualified to judge either way. Is really comes down to a personal decision.

Actually I am very proud to say I know many photographers within my circle that have won awards this week on their very first time entering, with or without the awards, I still love what they do.

Over the last few months I have been pushing the boundaries with some personal projects to create that award standard. I had a creative plan in my head and went and created some photographs during recent shoots, a few photos worked but I see some clear mistakes and they are not quite portraying what was in my head, so I will keep pushing and learning until I feel it is right.

I will finish this weeks blog showing you some of those photos and let you decide for yourself if they are yet of that award standard, you can be my judges.

Creative Day at Fort Lytton

Last month I had the opportunity to do a creative shoot at the historic Fort Lytton, which is located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River.

Fort Lytton is one of several coastal fortifications built along Australia’s coast in the 19th century to safeguard shipping lanes and ports from possible enemy raids.  From 1881 until the 1930s, Fort Lytton was Brisbane’s front line of defence and is regarded as the birthplace of Queensland’s military history. Regular training camps in military warfare were a highlight of Queensland’s political and social calendar.

Having such a cool location to shoot at gave me such a buzz.  I got to photograph up to 6 people during the day.  One of the models was Lisa Anderson, a model managed by Paramount Model Management.  As I got to know this stunning girl during our shoot I found she has a broad range of talents and experience.

Lisa has been modelling since she was 15 starting out on the runway then progressed into photographic modelling.  Lisa not only works as a model but also as a Retail Assistant and has her own blog as well as being a contributing writer for Fashion Weekly Magazine and this week starting working at The Fashionography as an Fashion Journalist intern.

When I asked Lisa why she chose modelling she said “it is her way of being creative.  She loves being able to adapt to different personalities and personas in each shoot that allow he to express herself in different ways”.

Lisa is clearly passionate and has a finger on the pulse of all things fashion and modelling – look out for this girl, she will be one to watch in the industry and such a pleasure to work with.

Last but certainly not least I can’t forget to mention that Lisa’s hair and makeup for this shoot was by Tami Perrin of Dr Dread a very talented and hardworking make up artist and hairstylist.

Here are some of my favourite photos from our session

Couple In Love

Recently I was privileged to photograph a lovely young couple, Dean and Storm.

The photography session was held on a beautiful property in the Gold Coast Hinterland. The rustic country sheds and old cattle yards made a perfect backdrop for our session. I was so grateful to photograph this couple, they clearly adore each other and I loved capturing how they whispered sweetly into each others ear. Love is beautiful, Dean and Storm you are a beautiful couple.

Here are some of my favourite shots from their session
