Autumn is the Perfect time for Outdoor Portraits

Autumn.  I love Autumn for so many reasons, it’s not too hot or too cold, the Autumn colours are a perfect combination of beautiful muted earthly colours with striking red, yellow and orange highlights.  As the changing leaves fall to the ground they create a stunning carpet of contrasting colours leaving you with that warm fuzzy feeling of comfort and love.

The main reason I love this time of year is for the beautiful light that is seen in the ‘golden hour’.  Whether you photograph landscapes or people the ‘golden hour’ lighting ie. late afternoon dusk or early morning dawn is the best light you could ask for – it simply glows with a wonderful golden haze.

The air is fresh and crisp with a hint of winter drawing close, the light is stunning and there really is no excuse but to get out into nature and capture beautiful natural photos.

I recommend looking for those gorgeous contrasting autumn colours, shooting the sun-flares, capturing reflections, seeking the golden light whereever it falls.

Remember you do have to look and find the light, look from all directions, look high and low and once you find it you will fall in love, just like I did.

When out in the golden hour make sure you experiment – My close friend Sheryn of Live in Love Photography was out with me in the ‘golden hour’ with her Lensbaby lens and created some funky photos and with her permission I can share a little of the magic of combining a lensbaby, golden hour and play.

I trust you all had a wonderful and Happy Easter last weekend and you are now enjoying the Anzac Day long weekend.  Lest we forget.  Where ever you are stay safe and enjoy.

Until next week.

Glamour Photography

A few weeks ago I came home with some great fashion buys after a morning of shopping.  I picked up this stunning black and silver dress that was straight then at the bottom it flared out, it was something a flamingo dancer might wear.  This got my creative juices flowing for another glamour photoshoot.

I specifically wanted a woman with red hair as I knew the contrast of the red hair with the black dress would be a stunning combination and would fit to my vision that was swirling around in my head.  I wanted natural glamour makeup with soft curled hair and some flowers in the hair to add a high fashion element to the shoot.

My model chosen for this shoot is from Mystique Model Management, her name is Heather Borck and she fits my vision perfectly.  This is my first time working with Heather and I found her very professional as well as warm and friendly.

To complete the creative team I needed a talented and experienced hair and make up artist, Morgan Leigh who runs Morgan Leigh Makeup Artistry.  Morgan and I have previously worked together and I found Morgan’s work of high standard and she is very experienced and knowledgeable, actually Morgan is currently studying for a Diploma of Cinemagraphic Makeup to increase and take her skills to a new level.

Before we start I discuss clothing, hair and make up options with the team – decide on our way forward and then Morgan takes control and “glams” up Heather for our shoot, this experience is very relaxing and I am sure Heather is feeling comfortable whilst undergoing the full treatment.

When finished Heather’s natural beauty has been enhanced and I just can’t wait to get her in front of the camera and watch the magic happen and bring my vision to life.  This is where I feel alive, inspired and very much at home.  I know I am born to do this – Glamour Photography

Yellow Yellow Everywhere

This week for something fun I challenged myself with a photography theme of yellow.  I thought ‘easy, fun, walk in the park kind of challenge, no hassle at all – knock it over in no time . . . ‘ Now,  I know you’re thinking the same!  Actually it has been quite an amusing challenge and a lot more difficult than I thought.

Do you realise how many people look at you very strange when you are standing in the middle of the road trying to take a photograph of a yellow sign from just the right angle.  I am sure one lady went to call the police or the hospital, she was probably not sure which one to start with!

Then I was walking by someone’s property when I spotted their lovely rose garden and more specifically a beautiful yellow rose (my mum’s favourite).  I thought I’d duck in and grab a shot . . . only to be chased away by a mad (well perhaps just concerned) lady with a broom – just picture me running down the street trying not to drop my camera whilst yelling “I only wanted a photo of your rose.”

Wow talk about a ‘fun’ challenge!

After these two experiences I was hesitant to stand by the road until a yellow car came along so I did what most normal people would do and headed into the shops to buy yellow things so I could photograph in the comfort of my home.  All the occupants of my home already know I am mad and challenged 🙂

Here are a few of my favourite images from this project.

Hopefully I will remain out of jail and hospital to write again, until next week (otherwise, please send bail money)!
